WVSU, WVU Lose Grant Funds

Clerical Errors Cost Hundreds Of Thousands

“The devil is in the details,” according to an old saying.

A pair of minor clerical errors mean the loss of hundreds of thousands of grant dollars to West Virginia State University and West Virginia University, according to a published report.

Affected is the controversial Upward Bound program, at WVSU and the decades-long McNair program at WVU.

The WVSU error was $104.. The WVU error was $2. Together, they are costing the universities about $500,000.

The WVSU program is under the direction of Barbara Cary, who calls the halt to the assistance “a tragedy.”

More importantly, the loss of funding means students won’t be able to utilize the funds to accomplish significant education goals.

West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito, (R), says she wants the situation to be relooked at by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
