Hurricane Champs Named Gamers Of The Week

Hurricane HS Student-Athletes Honored

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. is pleased to present this week’s Gamers of the Week to the Hurricane High Baseball and Softball teams.

The Redskins had an impressive run this season. They are currently in the number 1 seed in AAA baseball with a notable 29-7 record. With only four seniors on the roster they have a predominately young team. Coach Sutphin stated, “they are resilient and fun to be around, they are a tight knit group and work well with each other”. This will be important as they head into the state tournament facing number four ranked Morgantown.

Going into this game, Hurricane is in the same spot they were just four years ago on their last championship run. Attaining the same record as in 2013, the Redskins looks forward to bringing home the crown. “This is a great opportunity and they are trying to improve and get better this week, we’re going to put our best foot forward” said Sutphin. With jerseys washed and cleats shined, the Redskins are ready to go into the state tournament and play as if it were their last game.
Sadly, for seniors Garrett Gress, Evan Dearing, Ryan Loughry and Aaron Perry, this could be one of the last games they play with their team. Many memories have been made and they will be cherished as the Redskins push forward into the states.

Congratulations to the Hurricane Redskins baseball team and our other local standout teams.

The Lady Redskins softball team captured their third straight AAA state championship title last week as they defeated John Marshall High School by ten-run mercy rule with a score of 11-0 in five innings. They won their 23rd consecutive game to close out the season with a 36-1 overall record. Just to illustrate how dominant this Hurricane team was, since their lone loss to Huntington High School 5-2 on April 7th, the Lady Redskins went on a tear to score 221 runs and only allowing 35 runs, in their final 23 games. To add to their dominance in post-season play, Hurricane’s final five contests were all ten-run mercy rule victories over their opponents.

Led by seniors Katie Adams and Paige Scruggs, the Lady Redskins dominated at the plate driving in runs while freshman-pitching sensation Harley Vannatter hurled a shutout victory. Hurricane didn’t stop there as they placed five Redskins on the AAA all-tournament team including Kiersten Landers, Katie Adams, Paige Scruggs, Harley Vannatter, and Caiti Mathis. Before the Lady Redskins entered the state tournament they were ranked number nine in the Max Preps Xcellent Top 25 National Softball Rankings. Hurricane will expect to move up that list with a dominating final week of the season and another AAA state title. Head Coach Josh Caldwell and his Lady Redskins protected their title with a statement win in their final game of the 2017 season.
