A Look Back At “Powerball Jack”

Putnam County’s Most Colorful Character

We came to know him as “Powerball Jack.”

Andrew Jackson Whittaker, Jr., burst onto our scene, shortly, after he won the $314.9 million Powerball jackpot on Christmas Day, 2002.

He since says he wish he never bought the “lucky” ticket.

Hindsight says he is correct.

Nearly 15 years later, we can say that Whittaker’s intentions were great. He traded his signature black cowboy hat for a white hat. He gave away much of his new-found fortune. A house and car and cash to the clerk that sold him the ticket, millions to his church, and he started a foundation for the needy.

However, too many trips to the Pink Pony strip club, a few brushes with the law, and the deaths of his granddaughter, Brandy Bragg, her boyfriend and Jack’s daughter, turned his lucky story into monologue material with tragedy.
